In today’s trucks, the EGR system is primarily responsible for recycling your truck’s exhaust back into the engine’s combustion chamber and reducing NOx emissions while the DPF captures soot, unburned, and partially burned diesel particulates before they can enter the air. Keeping them clean and well-maintained means reducing your truck’s environmental impact and maintaining your truck’s efficiency.
While the EGR system and DPF are key to reducing a truck’s more noxious emissions, thanks to their roles they can become clogged up over time and outside of downtime. Once it’s too clogged, the DPF can enter a regeneration mode that burns off the accumulated particulates. You don’t have much of a choice when it does this and can leave your truck out of commission for an hour or more. As for your EGR system, this can become clogged with soot and debris from your fuel; this can leave the EGR valve stuck open, letting too much exhaust gas through.
